Allergens, and the honest bit about them

Syl Eats Ltd runs a take-away food business (SIC 56103) and provides other food services including catering for groups and events (SIC 56290), from 107 Baring Street in South Shields.

Information on the 14 allergens regulated in law is available for everything we sell, and it comes before you order rather than after. If you tell us about an allergy or intolerance we will check properly rather than guess to keep the queue moving.

The honest part is cross-contact. Counter food and catering come out of the same kitchen, using shared equipment, shared surfaces and shared frying oil, so we cannot promise that any dish is entirely free of an allergen even when the recipe does not contain it. For a severe allergy that matters, and we would rather say it than let somebody assume otherwise.

Catering orders deserve a word of their own. When someone orders for twenty people, the person ordering often does not know who in the group has an allergy. Ask them before you ring us, and tell us at the time of ordering rather than on the day.
